Montgomery After my visit, I joined the group Journey Media Showcase (TMS) who traveled by bus north of Birmingham. This city is a bit more appropriate Montgomery, a population of 230,000, but the total area of Birmingham has around one million people. Its largest employer is the University of Alabama Birmingham and several large banks and life insurance companies are also based there. Historically, Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama, been identified as the "Pittsburgh of the South".
