What’s on the menu for Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week 2010
Though it’s become known as an occasion for budget-friendly dining fun, Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week started in 2002 in response to the horrors of Sept.
Need a like downtown Atlanta restaurant for prom?
My prom group is going to try and do something like for prom. We aren’t looking for top of the line, but above applebees.
We have a pretty picky group so
no seafood
no Italian
no Chinese
and something that has chicken on the menu (some people don’t eat pork)
any excellent thoughts?
Although I don’t live in Atlanta anymore, I spent a major part of my life there and saw it grow from a somewhat sleepy southern metropolis to a major city and all the excellent and terrible that comes with it. To many who come to Atlanta, it might be tiresome to find it’s soul, but, to those of us who subdue know where to look the fundamentals are subdue there despite huge box corporate brands tiresome to paste over everything.
First, the atmosphere. Each place I’ve ever been to that is frequented by “the locals” (regardless of the city) has an unpretentious front. McKinnon’s is no exception. It’s located in a mini-strip mall.
Once you enter, you get the immediate feel that there is nothing “corporate” in this area this place. The owner greets you as an ancient friend. Now I know that southern generosity can be an over-used statement sometimes but in this case, it can’t be literal enough.
The Bar area is in this area as “ancient school” as one can get. It is comfortable and yet cozy enough that you don’t have to shout at the bartender for attention to order a drink. Unfortunately, the piano player was not in the night I went. But I’ve heard it’s one of the original karaoke bars (with real music accompaniment). If you’re not sure what your preference is, question if the owner can make you a Sazerac cocktail.
The food is tasty and set with the right parts that satrisy your appetite. I had the soft shell crab w/ the barbecue shrimp (and no, it’s not shrimp in a BBQ sauce). I have had soft shell crab before and barbecue shrimp and there’s only one place I can reflect of that does it better and they are in New Orleans! (so they darn well better make it better).
I also had a chance to sample the crawfish etoufee and again, the only place I’ve had it better is in New Orleans.
Finally, you have to try the bread pudding as a desert. I honestly reflect it’s the best I’ve ever had.
Also, while many restaurants are interested in setting land speed minutes for table turn, the owner can help you navigate a fantastic choice of before/all through/after dinner drinks, appetizers, main course and desert if you can’t choose for yourself.
The restaurant is located in the trendy business area of Atlanta known as Buckhead so there are alot choices for dining. You can find just in this area any corporate brand you want. There’s a wits local businesses stay strong for 20+ years, because the locals never stop coming to it. Visit McKinnon’s and you can learn part of the soul of fantastic city.
