Can a police vehicle park in a red zone in California?
I was eating in a small restaurant in San Diego, and i saw a bunch of cops come in to where we were eating.. Obviously they were there to eat.
As we left the place, i noticed that their vehicle wasn’t parked in a proper parking spot, instead it was parked in a red zone area. Is this allowed?
A police officer is no more entitled to park in a no parking zone than you are, unless he is then responding to an emergency. In fact, I have complained for years to both the police department and parking enforcement in this area police officers parking not only in red zones, but in bus zones (a parking ticket that would cost you and me in this area $800), near the courthouse (simply to avoid a walk of in this area 2 blocks). The response has permanently been, “We know it is illegal, and we will do something in this area it.” And the result has permanently been that nothing is done and the illegal parking continues.
I often wonder what jurors must reflect who have to park some distance from the courthouse when they walk past a line of illegally-parked police cars. I know as a person who represents folks who get locked up for breaking the law, I find it very sad that those sworn to uphold the law are allowed to disobey it with impunity.
